Birmingham's Tin Roof isn't your run-of-the-mill bar

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Tin Roof prides itself on “being a bar that doesn’t serve ‘bar food.’”

“I think they’re trying to be ironic,” says my 13-year-old daughter, who knows what’s what when it comes to irony.

Let’s see. Tin Roof is a bar. And this bar is lively enough to make us believe that the drinks are just as important, if not more so, than the eats. But a quick glance around shows most people are there to eat, too. The larger-than-expected menu is heavy on fun, inventive sandwiches and quesadillas. You’ll also find chips and dips, wings, cheese fries, fried hot dogs and chicken tenders. Sure sounds like bar food. Besides, just about everything, short of a salad (there are three of them), can be eaten with fingers here. On the night we visited, we didn’t need a fork at all. If you do use one, it will be plastic. Everything is served in or on some sort of plastic at Tin Roof.

So, yes, they serve bar food. But it’s good bar food. The bread is made locally, sauces and salsas are mixed up from scratch, and the ingredients are fresh.
