Benefits of line dancing go on and on

License plate frame on a car parked outside the front door of Surfside Beach’s Dick M. Johnson Civic Center reflected the sentiment shared by about 45 people last Thursday morning: “I’d rather be dancing.”

Rocking chairs, kicks, pivots, heel and toe tops, little hops and even a “tush push” all had their place and time in the routines. Minutes after the weekly beginner’s line dance lessons began for an hour and a half on March 15, people were still arriving and stepping right into things in a crowd spanning four rows stretching north and south.

The instructor, Judy Falconer, made everyone, especially newcomers to line dancing, feel more at ease and to not worry about falling out of synch.

“We have variations, no mistakes,” she said, spurring reassuring cheers from other dancers across the room.

This writer, who spent his first line-dance lesson in center front, next to an 88-year-old and a vacationing Newfoundlander, saw and felt first hand the connection made by various enterprises on the Grand Strand that teach line and partner dancing and coordinate dances. Even with only one other man in the civic center, in the back row, everybody fit in.
